Many Americans who thought they gave up their Canadian citizenship when naturalizing in the United States just got their citizenship back. And, their USA born children will also get Canadian citizenship bestowed on them.
According to the Wall Street Journal, “The April 17 amendment to Canada’s Citizenship Act automatically restores Canadian nationality to many people forced to renounce it when they became citizens of another country. It also grants citizenship to their children.”
Citizenship laws can be complicated. When someone naturalizes in the United States he does not necessarily give up his foreign citizenship despite promising to renounce his foreign loyalties. Parents from another country should take note to always register the births of their children at their home country consulate when a child is born in the United States. The same thing applies to children of Americans born abroad.
